How to Upgrade Ubuntu Desktop 9.10 to 10.04 Lucid Lynx OK! Ubuntu 10.04 ("Lucid Lynx") is almost upon us now. It has hit BETA 1, a step up from ALPHA 3 (more than a week ago) and is to be officially released on April 29, 2010. If you're a Windows user who occasionally (pretends to) dabble in Linux, and has forgotten how to upgrade, here it is for you in a concise and easy-to-follow manner. Firstly, this article is only about how to upgrade from within Ubuntu, and it's only for the DESKTOP (NOT Server!) version. If you have a version prior to 9.10; you will need to progressively upgrade to the next higher version before upgrading to 10.04. You really can't jump versions here. Example: Upgrade 8.10 > 9.04 > 9.10 > 10.04 (No jumps allowed!) *(Note that 10 [in 10.04] means 2010 and 04 means month 4. Ubuntu has always been designed to be released on a 6-month development cycle). If you have slow internet connection OR cannot free at least 1488MB of hard disk space and need to do an offline upgrade, there is a good article here on this subject. Also, you should realize that this is Beta software, so only upgrade now if you know how to save yourself in case something go wrong. Otherwise, wait for the stable release in 3 weeks time. Pre-Upgrade: -Ensure that you have at least 1488MB of free space in your "File System" folder. Clean up your system to free up some space especially if you don't have much space available. To remove old installation setup packages and dependencies, in a Terminal window (From the top menu, Applications > Accessories > Terminal), type in: sudo apt-get clean sudo apt-get autoclean sudo apt-get autoremove -Empty the trash. (If you can't find the space and especially if yours is a Windows (WUBI) installation of Ubuntu, consider doing the Offline Upgrade mentioned above which requires only about 800 MB of space as you will be saving a 650MB chunk of ISO file elsewhere on your hard drive). Update Manager -Update your 9.10 to the latest available updates. -Run Update Manager (From the top menu, System > Administration > Update Manager) and press "Check" to check for Updates, followed by "Install Updates" to get your system up-to-date. Next, take a deep breath, cross your fingers, touch wood and proceed to: Upgrading to Stable version (after April 29, 2010): (At the time of writing this article, the Stable version is not out yet; it will only be out on April 29, 2010; so skip this and go to the Beta version below). "New distribution release '10.04' is available" Stay on Update Manager, press "Check" again and you should see "New distribution release '10.04′ is available". Click "Upgrade" and proceed according to instructions on the screen. OR Upgrading to Beta version: Run Application pop-up 1. Press Alt + F2 to open the Run Application pop-up window. 2. Type "update-manager -d" (without the quotes) to enable Beta version upgrade. 3. Update Manager will now run and do some checking and then display: "New distribution release '10.04′ is available". Click "Upgrade" and follow the on-screen instructions. So far so good ... Aaaaaaargh!!!!! 4. If you don't hit upon any show stopper, you should be able to upgrade easily. Finally, pat yourself on the back. You'd just upgraded to the latest and greatest version of a very good OS and did not even have to go out and buy the (pirated?) CD. Among other improvements, you should expect faster boot-up times and more exciting colors than brown. And some bugs too! Enjoy! New desktop but same old boring brown PS: I was forced to abort this and do the Offline Upgrade as I can only free about 1200 MB of space after trying out all sorts of things including removing Open Office files, and deleting foreign language files and fonts. This is because I only have about 3.5 GB of space on my hard disk for Ubuntu. PPS: Upon the first boot-up, the first color I see is still brown. I changed this to a much nicer and lighter shade of brown, IMMHO

How to Speed-up Your Mac [Performance Guide]   Although Macs are designed to be performance beasts, there comes a time in every shiny Apple computer's life when the stresses of computing life can get to them… I've experienced this with my own MacBook; it's starting to get a little sluggish, even though I now use it for much less power-hungry applications such as writing and email. Occasionally, I'll dabble in some image editing or graphics creation with The GIMP or Inkscape, or some music composition in Garageband. But I've noticed some serious performance lag as I near my first year with the Mac. So, today I present to you some quick tips on how to enhance the performance of your Mac, be it an Apple portable, an all-in-one iMac, or that beast of a machine, the Mac Pro. Clean out the "Downloads" folder: This is a surprising one; sometimes, you never realize how big the Downloads folder on your Mac can really get. Mine is almost 2GB (!). This is valuable hard-disk space that could be utilized in better ways. I recommend you delete any unnecessary files in this folder (if possible, clean-out the entire folder). Move any files you want to keep for future use (such as installation packages) to an external hard drive. Clean out the "Start-up" Processes: Some applications launch immediately when you start-up your Mac. However, you may not need to use any of them, so why not remove them from the Startup que? Do this by navigating to: Apple Menu -> System Preferences -> Accounts -> Login Items. In there, simply click on the name of a startup item, and click the "minus" sign at the bottom of the list box. Get rid of languages you don't need: By default, OS X installs a bunch of languages to make the OS more universally accessible. But you may not need most of those files; simply remove them by using a nifty utility called Monolongual. Restart your Mac: If you tend to keep your Mac on for a long time (a good few days at most), it's time to give the poor thing a rest — they do have feelings too, you know! Restart the machine, and you may experience a jump in performance. Repair your system: Utilities like Onyx (link to application site) can perform "repairs" to the system, fixing little portions of the OS that may have gotten damaged with the day-to-day stresses of digital life. Clean the Hard Drive: Move-off those unnecessary files like movies, music, and photos, to an external hard drive. Personally, I have my DVD collection which is optimized for iPod viewing sitting on my external drive, saving over 20-30GB of space. Saving disk space gives your Mac a "fresh" feel too, and it makes Spotlight searches that much quicker. Finally, it's highly recommended that if you own any of the latest Macs (from 2008 onwards, like the uni-body Mac Books), you upgrade to Snow Leopard. This may not seem an impossible idea, as researchers from UW (University of Washington) have already been working on a particular IT project that will allow open sourcing of all proprietary software. Apple and Microsoft may not expose everything but the fact that both are generating programs for pixel resolution on screen is a good start for manipulating their programs and has them open source. Each screen display is composed of blocks of codes that are prefabricated and seen time and again every 20 times in one second or so. The analogy is explained by the professor as compared to the HTML. We can all see the HTML, he said. But seeing it on the desktop may seem impossible. A certain web page may show the Google map, or a video from You Tube but creating those similar stuffs using standard computer programs is a hard task to accomplish. The UW professor Fogarty and a computer science and engineering doctoral student, Dixon has for two years been on the works on this Prefab. Prefab's main program is said to be already done. But developments are still in the process for additional options as well as for commercializing Prefab. Dixon stated that the concept behind Prefab is for the user to be able to use a personally preferred program and still be able to incorporate features from another program, therefore providing a user interface that is fused and cohesive.
